Colorado School Shooting – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the shooter in Wednesday’s tragic Evergreen High School attack as 16-year-old Desmond Holly. According to officials, Holly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting two of his peers during the mid-day incident that has shaken the Evergreen community and the wider Denver metro area.
The shooting unfolded shortly after 12:30 p.m. at Evergreen High School, located about 30 miles west of Denver in the Rocky Mountain foothills. Students, teachers, and staff were thrust into chaos as shots rang out both inside and outside the school building. Authorities later confirmed that two students were shot during the attack, with one still listed in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley told reporters that law enforcement officers arrived at the school within minutes of the first 911 call. When they entered the scene, they discovered Holly with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
Importantly, none of the police officers discharged their weapons during the incident. “The suspect acted alone, and our responding officers located him within five minutes,” Kelley stated. “This was an incredibly fast and coordinated response.”
The scale of the emergency response was significant, with over 100 officers from surrounding jurisdictions rushing to the high school to provide backup. First responders swiftly evacuated students, secured the campus, and began the difficult process of reuniting families. Parents were directed to designated areas where they could meet their children safely, though many waited anxiously for hours for confirmation of their child’s wellbeing.
Authorities have not yet released a motive for the shooting. Investigators are currently combing through Holly’s background, social media presence, and any potential warning signs in the days leading up to the attack. Sheriff’s officials stressed that the investigation is still in its early stages and urged the public not to speculate.

School officials announced that Evergreen High School will remain closed through at least the rest of the week while investigators continue their work and crisis counselors are made available to students, staff, and families.
Colorado has a painful history of school shootings, most notably the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, which occurred just 20 miles away in Littleton. Wednesday’s attack has once again reignited discussions about school safety, mental health resources for students, and firearm access for minors.
Governor Jared Polis released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and gratitude to first responders. “Our hearts are broken for the Evergreen community tonight,” Polis said. “We must continue to work together to ensure our schools are safe havens for learning, not places of fear.”
