Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on New Jersey Turnpike Leaves One Dead, Two Injured – A deadly chain-reaction crash on the New Jersey Turnpike brought traffic to a standstill Thursday morning, August 7, 2025, after five vehicles collided in the southbound lanes near milepost 68.2 in East Windsor Township, Mercer County. The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. and claimed the life of one motorist, leaving two others with minor injuries.
According to preliminary reports from the New Jersey State Police, the incident began when a Kenworth semi-trailer struck the rear of a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The impact forced the pickup into the back of a Freightliner tractor-trailer directly ahead. The force of the collision caused one of the pickup’s rear wheels to dislodge and strike a nearby Ford van. The Kenworth semi then swerved and collided with the side of a Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane.
Moments after the initial impact, the Ford F-150 erupted into flames, trapping its driver inside. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency crews from local fire and rescue departments, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of family.
The drivers of the Ford van and Mercedes-Benz sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both are expected to make a full recovery. The drivers of the Freightliner tractor-trailer and the Kenworth semi were reportedly uninjured and remained on scene to cooperate with investigators.
State Police closed several southbound lanes of the Turnpike for more than four hours as accident reconstruction teams worked to piece together the events leading up to the crash. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes, causing significant congestion throughout the late morning and early afternoon in the East Windsor area.
Investigators are examining multiple factors that may have contributed to the accident, including vehicle speed, driver attentiveness, and possible mechanical failures. Weather conditions at the time were reported to be clear, ruling out poor visibility or slippery roads as immediate causes. The crash remains under active investigation, and no charges had been filed as of Thursday evening.
New Jersey State Police urged drivers to remain cautious and attentive, particularly when sharing the road with large commercial vehicles. “Crashes of this magnitude are a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate on high-speed roadways,” a State Police spokesperson said. “We are committed to determining the cause and ensuring accountability where appropriate.”
