Maine State Police Release New Details in Fatal Route 302 Shooting in Windham – The quiet town of Windham, Maine, was left reeling Friday afternoon after a fatal shooting on the busy Route 302 corridor claimed the life of a local man and triggered a massive police response. Authorities have since released new details that shed light on the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
According to the Maine State Police, the incident began around 1:55 p.m. when Windham officers received reports of gunfire near the intersection of Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) and Landing Road. Witnesses reported a drive-by shooting in which a motorcyclist was targeted by an armed individual in a silver sedan.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 33-year-old Erin Hayne of Casco suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by bystanders—including a Maine Game Warden who happened to be in the area—Hayne succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several witnesses described the terrifying moment when the silver sedan pulled alongside Hayne’s motorcycle and opened fire. Shots rang out in broad daylight, forcing bystanders to duck for cover. Some witnesses traveling in a U-Haul truck bravely followed the suspect’s vehicle and relayed critical information, including a license plate number, to emergency dispatchers.
The sedan was later located by sheriff’s deputies behind a Dunkin’ restaurant in Raymond, but the suspect was not found inside. The discovery heightened concerns about an armed gunman on the loose.
Within minutes of the shooting, law enforcement agencies across Cumberland County mobilized. Officers from Windham, Raymond, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office were joined by Maine State Police tactical teams as a shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents and businesses.
